Bats are vital for healthy ecosystems, yet their populations in Atlantic Canada have declined drastically.
Through our project, we have found surviving bats and persisting critical roosts in Nova Scotia by partnering directly with landowners and communities. We’ve discovered previously unknown roosting habitat, collected valuable long-term population data, supported new research projects and built strong partnerships with bat stewards to support coexistence. These efforts are making a real difference: landowners and Nova Scotians are starting to report increased bat activity on their properties, some seeing a bat for the first time in over a decade and community support for bat conservation is growing. By blending research, stewardship, and education, we are helping ensure bats—and the ecosystems they support—have a future in Kespukwitk and Atlantic Canada.
Observations of bats in Atlantic Canada can be reported to the Atlantic Canada Bat Hotline 1-833-434-2287 (BATS) in coordination with Nova Scotia sightings to www.batconservation.ca.
